Second Team
Disapointing loss away at Castleford
16/02/08 – Castleford – Away – League – Lost – 13-0
This week the 2nd team travelled down to Castleford. Moortown had probably their strongest 2nd team they had put out all season, with a very strong back row and a very skilful, talented set of backs. The front 5 were very strong also. Before the game skipper Dave Lyons said “If we stand any chance of winning this league then we must win this game”.
During the 1st half it started off very well with both teams playing at a similar level. After roughly 20 minutes Moortown conceded a well deserved try from Castleford. However the try was not converted. Just before the half time whistle, Moortown conceded yet another try. This was given from a rather dodgy decision from the referee who obviously has x-ray vision and can see through people. Again the try was not converted. Half time, 10-0.
During half time a change was made to the front row. Tight head prop Luke Barletta came off, second row Kev Houghton moved forward to prop and Alex Durie joined Eddie Gray in the 2nd row. This was to strengthen up the line outs.
As the 2nd half kicked off, the line outs did strengthen up with Gray and Durie taking all their balls from hooker Dom Ellis. From then on, Moortown spent a lot of time in the Castleford half. Unfortunately they just couldn’t get over the try line. 5 minutes from full time the score line remained the same. But things went from bad to worse as Fly Half Richard Davenport took a nasty cheap shot to the hip area. After he had clearly had kicked the ball away but the Cas player still decided to take him out. However Moortown would like to thank the Castleford Physio for helping out and treating Davenport. Davenport had to leave the pitch and the back line was re-arranged. Just before time Castleford won a penalty and the game ended. Full time, 13-0.
After the game skipper Dave Lyons said “OK, 1st place is out the question now, but lets go on and win the rest of our games and come 2nd!!!”
